Anemone hortensis ssp pavonina Peacock Windflower
This spectacular Anemone has various colour forms including the vivid red one below. It is quite similar to Anemone coronaria but has a central white or yellow base to each petal forming a ring in the open flower. Its native range is Bulgaria, East Aegean Islands., Greece, Turkey, Balkan states but has been introduced to Italy and France.
In some botanical circles and within many horticultural organisations, it has been elevated to species level with the name Anemone pavonina but both Kew and World Pants online insist it is Anemone hortensis or a sub species of Anemone horstensis.
