Adonis flammea Flame Adonis
In Britain, finding the increasingly rare species of Adonis annua (Pheasant's-eye) is a special botanical occasion and I have rarely found it. We were very lucky to find two Adonis species (A. aestevalis and A. flammea) growing together in an arable field of brassicas, a classic habitat for Adonis species. The petals are longer than in Adonis annua but the colour is similar in the red form. There is a yellow form as well.
Adonis flammea has possibly been recorded in Britain but has not been seen for decades but just over the channel in France, Germany, the Netherlands it can be found and is sometimes very common. It is found in southern Greece but as you go eastwards the frequencies of occurrence decrease. In Turkey it is uncommon in the west but found in reasonable numbers around Lake Van which was the area we explored.
