St Kilda - settlement from a distance
St Kilda is an island 41 miles to the west of Benbecula which sits between the outer Hebridean islands of Lewis and Harris. The interest here is the sheep population which has been left to go wild for so long so that population waxes and wanes. This was the subject of an academic expedition by my daughter Amy and colleagues from Edinburgh University who borrowed the camera to take these pictures. The indigenous population of islanders were evacuated in the 1930s. Now the island is visited by birders visiting the huge colonies of gannets and fulmars amongst other bird life, academic expeditions and of course the ubiquitous Ministry of Defence which has an outpost on the Island.
