Prasophyllum hians   Yawning Leek Orchid Endemic

Prsophyllum hians whole Prsophyllum hians close

Prasophyllum means Leek-green leaves. Leek-green: (Prasinus) leaves: (phyllum). hians means open mouthed so the systematic name is a sort of translation of the English. The reason that members of the Prasophyllum genus are known as the Leek orchids is that the leaf is inrolled like that of an Allium or Leek. This is quite small orchid and the close-ups perhaps don't reveal a floret less than a centimetre across. It will most often be found where there has been a fire the previous season.
