Linum bienne   Pale Flax C DD N

Linum bienne whole Linum bienne close

The difference between the three common Flaxes, Linum perenne (Perennial Flax), Linum bienne (Pale Flax) and Linum usitatissimum (Flax) is a bit subtle relying on characters such as numbers of leaf veins and sepal sizes which are difficult to see. Linum perenne though is a national rarity and Linum usitatissimum has larger flowers so together with other characters this looks like Linum bienne. At this site there were quite a few plants in prime condition in June.

It is found most often in southern England and coastal Wales, dotted around in central England, concentrated in the south eastern corner of Ireland but largely absent from Scotland.
