Carex laevigata whole Carex laevigata fruit

This is a tufted sedge which prefers shady places on basic soil. The two specimens we saw were quite different with the plant in the LHS photo being nearly 1 m tall.

It has a decidedly western distribution on the Mainland of Great Britain but is present in north and southern Ireland without much in between.
